A percentile is a claim about a population. If you do not know which population, the number is meaningless. Here is exactly how Combine/100 produces every rank.

Every rank has a named population

Your percentile is always relative to a specific reference group — defined by sex, age band, and where relevant bodyweight class or test modality. We print that population on the result so you always know who you are being compared with.

We never blend incompatible groups. A competitive powerlifting bench-press reference is not the same population as the general public, and we do not pretend otherwise.

We interpolate between published points

Each reference table gives performance values at a set of percentiles — for example P10, P25, P50, P75, P90. To place your mark, we find the two published points your result falls between and interpolate linearly to estimate your percentile.

Points that land exactly on a published benchmark are reported as that percentile. We flag estimated targets that fall between published points so you can tell an interpolated number from a directly reported one.

We do not invent the tails

If your mark is below the lowest published reference point, we report it as below that benchmark rather than fabricating a P2 or P1. The same applies at the top: beyond the highest published point, we say you exceed it instead of inventing a P99. Extrapolating past real data would be a guess dressed up as precision.

Units and bodyweight are handled explicitly

Strength tables are keyed by bodyweight class, so we ask for your bodyweight and place you in the correct class. You can enter marks in pounds or kilograms; conversions are exact and happen before any comparison.

VO2 Max is compared within your sex and age decade, and treadmill and cycle-ergometer norms are kept separate because they are not interchangeable for the same person.

Know the limits

Reference data varies in sample size, recency, and how it was collected. Larger, better-documented samples give more reliable percentiles than small ones. We surface the sample size for each comparison so you can weigh the result accordingly.
